Complete Dentures

Complete dentures, also known as full dentures, are used when all the natural teeth in either the upper or lower jaw (or both) are missing.

Materials are made of Acrylic Resin Base and Artificial Teeth

Acrylic Resin Base:

  • Material: The base of the denture is made from polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA), a type of acrylic resin.

  • Properties: PMMA is durable, lightweight, and can be color-matched to the natural gums. It provides a stable foundation for the artificial teeth and offers comfort to the wearer.

  • Function: The base rests directly on the gums and jawbone, distributing the forces of chewing across a broad area to minimize pressure points.

Artificial Teeth:

  • Material: The teeth in acrylic dentures are also made from acrylic resin, although sometimes composite resins or porcelain may be used for specific cases.

  • Properties: Acrylic teeth are durable, resistant to wear, and can be color-matched to the patient's natural teeth. They are less likely to cause wear on opposing natural teeth compared to porcelain.

  • Function: These teeth are designed to replicate the appearance and function of natural teeth, allowing the wearer to chew, speak, and smile confidently.

Types

  • Conventional Full Dentures: These are made after the remaining teeth have been removed and the gum tissue has healed, typically taking several months.

  • Immediate Full Dentures: These are placed immediately after the removal of the remaining teeth. They provide immediate function and aesthetics but may require adjustments as the gums heal and shrink.

Benefits

  • Restore complete function for eating and speaking.

  • Improve facial aesthetics and support facial muscles.

  • Customizable to fit the patient’s mouth comfortably.
